Why Organic? (And other frequently asked questions)

Why Organic?

Most consumers do not understand the dangers that are hidden within their cosmetics and skincare products. More than 60% of what you apply to your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream. Unfortunately, there are very few regulations when it comes to cosmetics and skincare (yes, even those labeled organic). This, in turn, allows companies to add harmful ingredients to our products then subsequently advertise them as good for us!

Below we have provided a list of chemicals to avoid when making a skincare or cosmetic purchase:

Talc – Talc is a carcinogen and has the composition similar to asbestos.

Bismuth Oxychloride – This is in the Arsenic family.  This is a heavy, yet brittle metal found in many popular mineral make-ups.  It is often described as an itchy irritant.

Dimethicone – A silicone-based polymer, which is a non-biodegradable chemical that is bad for both your skin and the environment. May cause dryness, breakouts, and it inhibits your skins natural cell turnover process.

PEGs – Polyethylene Glycol – a carcinogen known to open the pores enabling toxins to more easily enter the body.  They have shown evidence of genotoxicity; this also is an endocrine disruptor and developmentally toxic.

Petrolatum – Used as a barrier to lock in moisture and can be contaminated with cancer causing chemicals found in crude oil and its by-products.  The European Union lists it as a dangerous substance and has banned the use of most petroleum-based products.

Parabens – Are known endocrine disruptors also known to cause reproductive toxicity and neurotoxicity.

Disodium EDTA – A “penetration enhancer”.  It disrupts the skin cells so that other chemicals can get in more easily, i.e. other chemicals in your products and chemicals in your shower water.

Phthalates – Cause cell mutation and developmental defects and hormone disruption.

Aluminum – Linked to breast cancer and found in anti-perspirants.

Parfum – Endocrine disruptor and known cancer- causing agent.  Fragrance penetrates the skin at elevated rates because of its high alcohol content.

Mercury – Found in most mascaras and lipsticks (as well as lead) and is classified as a neurotoxin.  Most likely not found on your ingredient list because it falls under an FDA loophole.

Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Avobenzone – Hormone disruptor, lowers testosterone levels in boys.  Linked to many cancers including skin cancer. Banned in Hawaii and Key West because it is killing the coral reef and fish.
